World Bank must tackle climate crisis
World Bank must take ‘quantum leap’ to tackle climate crisis, UN expert says Simon Stiell calls for reform at development banks to enable governments to provide more climate finance to developing world The World Bank must take a “quantum leap” to provide new finance to tackle the climate crisis or face “climate-driven economic catastrophe” that would bring all the world’s economies to a halt, the UN climate chief has said. Simon Stiell warned that there were just two years left to draw up an international plan for the climate that would cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5C above preindustrial levels. “There’s no room now for half measures,” he warned, referring to the global heat that has surpassed records for the past 10 months. “Averting a climate-driven economic catastrophe is core business.” But Stiell held out a promise of global economic renewal, for the developed and developing world, if countries shift to a low-carbon

Jeff Bezos’s Amazon and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are both fighting in court to have the National Labor Relations Board declared unconstitutional. Starbuck’s and Trader Joe’s joined them in separate lawsuits. All of these companies have a disgraceful history of worker abuse and union busting. I’m going to do my best to keep you all informed about this case as it snakes its way through the courts. The future of unions may depend on the final verdict. Two years
‘Two years to save the world’: UN climate chief calls for faster action and more finance United Nations executive climate secretary Simon Stiell said he knows his warning may sound melodramatic but action over the next two years is “essential". Humanity has only two years left “to save the world” by making dramatic changes in the way it spews heat-trapping emissions according to the head of the United Nations climate agency. It has even less time to act to get the finances behind such a massive shift. Governments of the world are facing a 2025 deadline for new and stronger plans to curb carbon pollution, nearly half of the world's populations voting in elections this year, and crucial global finance meetings are taking place later this month in Washington. United Nations executive climate secretary Simon Stiell said Wednesday he knows his warning may sound melodramatic but action over the next two years is “essential.” “We still have a chance to make greenhouse gas emissions
The heat is on
The heat is on: what we know about why ocean temperatures keep smashing records Over the last year, our oceans have been hotter than any time ever recorded. Our instrumental record covers the last 150 years. But based on proxy observations, we can say our oceans are now hotter than well before the rise of human civilisation, very likely for at least 100,000 years. This isn’t wholly unexpected. Ocean temperatures have been steadily rising due to human-caused global warming, which in turn means record hottest years have become increasingly common. The last time ocean temperature records were broken was 2016 and before that it was 2015. The last year we experienced a record cold year was way back at the start of the 20th century. But what is remarkable about the past year is the huge ongoing spike in global ocean temperature which began in April last year. Last year was hotter than the previous record year by a whopping 0.25°C. In contrast the margins of other previous record years were
